St Nicholas' Parish Church South Gosforth

It is thought that St Nicholas’ Parish Church could be of Saxon origin and was recorded as being in existence in 1170, it was rebuilt in 1799 and extended in 1819 and again in 1913.

Being close to the Great North Road the cemetery contains the remains of many travellers who died or were murdered on the highway.

The parents of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Mary Clarke and Edward Moulton Barrett were married at the church in 1805.
Many members of the Brandling family are buried in the churchyard, the large vault with its four pillars was constructed for the burial of Charles John Brandling in 1826 and the remains of seven other members of the family are also buried in the vault. As well as being sheriffs, mayors and MP's the Brandlings were also colliery owners but by 1852 the family was bankrupt. Their name lives on today in Brandling Park, Brandling Arms Hotel, Brandling Villa Hotel, and Brandling Village in Jesmond
