This Norman Keep was built by Henry ll between 1168 – 1178. Overlooking the river Tyne the Castle Keep was built on a site which at one time also contained a Roman Fort and an Anglo-Saxon cemetery as well as an earlier castle (the New Castle on the Tyne) built by the son of William the Conqueror, Robert Curthose.
