Grainger Market

The Grainger Market

The Grainger Market, built by Richard Grainger and John Dobson, opened in 1835. Some of the original features still remain today, the weigh house, originally used by traders and buyers to weigh meat is still used except now it is people who are getting weighed for 20p.

An air raid shelter used in World War Two still exists and runs underneath the length of the market.

As well as stalls selling meat and fruit and vegetables, the world’s smallest Marks and Spencer store can be found here and is the last surviving Marks and Spencer Original Penny Bazaar.
