City Walls

In 1265 the town walls were built to protect against invasion from Scottish raiders. The walls were not completed until the middle of the 14th Century they were over two miles in length and reached up to 25 ft high and at places 7 ft thick enclosing both the castle and the Black Gate. There were six gateways, seventeen towers and smaller lookout turrets.

Part of the original walls still exist today, the most complete section is found near Stowell Street and Black Friars which includes the remains of four of the towers.

There are also remains of the City Walls behind the Central Station
