Jesmond

Jesmond is a residential suburb north of Newcastle upon Tyne with a population of about 12,000. Much of the houses date from the 1800’s however a lot of the larger properties have been developed into flats or hotels.
Jesmond today has a high student population due to the proximity to the two universities in the town centre, however it has also been home to notable citizens such as Lord William Armstrong, philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, Chris Donald founder of Viz magazine, Bryan Ferry, journalist Nancy Spain, and even Butch Cassidy’s mother, Ann Sinclair Gillies who was born in Newcastle in 1849 and lived in Brandling Village, Jesmond. Eileen Blair, first wife of George Orwell is buried in St Andrews Cemetery Jesmond.

Jesmond Picture House which was built in 1922 and was very popular in its heyday, it closed in 1993 and is currently being demolished to make way for an office block.
