St Andrew's Parish Church Newgate Street

St Andrew’s church is the oldest church in Newcastle and dates from the 12th century, it is thought that there was an earlier building on the site, possibly from Saxon times, and some of the stones used to build the tower are from Roman times.

Amongst those buried in the churchyard are; Jane Smith Step-daughter of John Wesley who married her mother Mary Vazeille, Charles Avison composer consuctor and organist who organized concerts in the Groat Market and was church organist at St Nicholas’ for over 30 years, Mary Turner first wife of the Reverend William Turner and cousin of Mrs Gaskell the author.

Today the Church has a thriving congregation also hosting the worshipping community of the Greek Orthodox Church in Newcastle.
