The cemetery was consecrated in 1858.
Amongst the 43,000 burials lies the final resting place of Eileen Maud Blair, first wife of George Orwell who was born in South Shields. She died of a heart attack following an operation at the age of 40.
Also buried here is PC Bain who was killed in an explosion of nitroglycerine on the Town Moor in 1867, he had been assisting in the disposal of the chemical when it exploded killing PC Bain and four other people. William Newcombe the architect responsible for the design of the Royal Victoria Infirmary has a rather impressive tomb complete with four columns and a Greek inscription.
The two small Victorian Chapels are no longer in use but the carvings on the roofs are still intact.
