North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers

Neville Hall dates from 1872 and was designed by Archibold Dunn. The interior of the building is unchanged since the 19 century and is a Grade ll listed building. Sir William Armstrong lectured and worked here amongst other notable engineers.


The Nicholas Wood Memorial Library is the largest mining library in the world. Nicholas Wood worked at Killingworth Colliery and was a friend and mentor of George Stephenson. He was instrumental in the advancement of coal mining safety having a special interest in ventilation in mine.


The Institute was awarded the Royal Charter by Queen Victoria in 1876


Today the Institute continues to hold an important reference library, which contains among other important documents, the engineering plans of the Eiffel Tower. There are regular events and lectures held and the institute still enjoys a thriving membership.
