Old Eldon Square

Old Eldon Square

Old Eldon Square is a public square on Blackett Street. It was originally a private garden which was designed and built by Thomas Oliver and John Dobson. Three terraces were built facing a central square, In 1915 it was opened to the public with lawns and flower beds which were removed during the development of Eldon Square shopping centre in the 1970’s.

The Georgian terraced houses which still remain on one side now contain small businesses, cafĂ©’s etc. The war memorial, designed by Charles Hartwell, was erected after the First World War. Apparently everyone in Newcastle paid a shilling to pay for its construction.

Old Eldon Square recently underwent a revamp as part of the shopping centre redevelopment and now has a new lighting scheme with new businesses opening and now includes Starbucks and Nandos amongst other restaurants around the central square.

The lawns are a popular place in the summer for office workers and shoppers to sit and eat their lunch and on Saturdays it is a customary gathering place for teenagers.
