Earsdon Village

Earsdon is one of the oldest villages in Northumberland. The original name was Erdesdun which means Hill of Red Earth. There has been evidence found of occupation of the area going back to the early Iron Age. From 1097 until 1537 the monks of Tynemouth Priory owned Earsdon. During the 19th century, coal mining grew in importance alongside the agricultural economy.

The Manor House in the village was once home to Mr Davies, the inventor of the first submarine escape apparatus, his workshop was in the small adjoining cottage

The Cannon Inn was given its name during the Napoleonic wars when a French ship, its crew and at least one cannon was captured in the river Blyth. Several French prisoners were held in Earsdon village

The Village is proud to have won the best village category of Northumbria in Bloom for the last seven years
